Trip Information

Several fun and exciting trips will be offered during Orientation. These trips are optional and require students to pre-register. Trips for Orientation 2008 include an overnight camping trip to Copper Harbor, an overnight canoeing trip in the Sylvania Wilderness Area, a hiking trip through the Porcupine Mountains, a Geological Excursion throughout the Keweenaw, and a sailing adventure on Portage Lake. Community Service opportunities are also available, including Habitat for Humanity builds. August is one of the best times of the year in the Keweenaw with wonderful weather and days that stretch into late evenings.

You will be able to reserve your spot for one of these trips online by clicking on the links below, or over the phone by calling the Rozsa Center Box Offie at 906-487-3200. Information will be posted once it becomes available.

Please remember that the prices and times for these trips are tentative. This information will be updated within the month and other trips will be added to this list as well. Stay tuned for more details.

 

 


Overnight at Copper Harbor - [top]

Saturday, August 30 - Sunday, August 31
Departs at 7:30am
Cost: $50.00
Join 36 first-year students and representatives from the Michigan Tech staff, and head off to the beautiful Copper Harbor area. Enjoy exploring the area, hiking at Estevant Pines, swimming, and kayaking on beautiful Lake Superior. Overnight camping will be at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park. The fee covers all meals and snacks, the bus trip up to Copper Harbor, kayak rentals, and the entrance fee into Fort Wilkins campground. Tents will be provided, but plan on bringing your own personal water bottle, insect repellent, sunscreen, flashlight, sleeping bag, poncho or jacket, swimsuit, and towel.

Overnight Sylvania Wilderness Area Canoe Trip- [top]

Saturday, August 30
Departs at 8:00am
Cost: $50.00

Visit the rustic Sylvania Wilderness Area, located just south of Watersmeet near the Wisconsin border. With almost 19,000 acres of pristine natural growth pines, 34 named lakes, and sandy beaches, this area provides a rare outlook on nature at its finest. Spend a fun filled weekend canoeing, hiking, swimming, and wilderness camping. The fee covers transportation, park admission, canoe rental, and food. Some camping experience is suggested, as the camping will be very rustic. Bring your own sleeping bag (lightweight/backpacking), water bottle, plastic bowl or cup, insect repellent, sunscreen, rain poncho or jacket, swimsuit, and towel. Tents will be provided. Porkies Trip - [top]

Cost: $15.00

This day trip gives you the chance to explore a small part of the almost 60,000 acres of the Porcupine Mountains located just outside of Ontonagon. Over 100 miles of trails curve throughout the largest area of undeveloped wilderness in the state, revealing many breathtaking views, waterfalls, and wildlife. Join 41 other first-year students and enjoy a day outside in this magnificent State Park. You should plan to bring your own personal water bottle, insect repellant, and make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes. The fee includes lunch, snacks, and admission to the park.

Geological Excurison - [top]

Saturday, August 30
9:00am – 1:00pm
Cost: $15.00

Learn about the most notable geological features of the Keweenaw, while interacting with students from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. This half day trip starts out with a visit to the Quincy copper mine located just across the bridge in Hancock. The remainder of the trip includes a short drive and hike to a local waterfall where you can experience some of the magnificent terrain and major rock types. Please wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes and jacket (the mine tends to be chilly even in the summer). Your fee covers admission into the mine, transportation, and a snack.

Habitat for Humanity Build - [top]

Saturday, August 30, 8:00am - 5:00pm
Cost: FREE (you still need to reserve your spot on this trip as space is limited)

Be someone’s hero – come help Habitat for Humanity construct a home for a local family. A foreman will be on-site to assist with the construction, so no experience is required and all equipment is provided. Be sure to wear appropriate construction attire: no sandals or shorts please! Come join us as we have a great time making a meaningful impact on our local community. Please note that even though this trip is free, you still need to "purchase" a ticket to reserve your space on the trip. Lunch, water, and transportation to the build site are included.

Introduction to the Tech Trails- [top]

Saturday, August 30
12:00pm-2:00pm
Cost: FREE (you still need to reserve your spot on this trip as space is limited)

Come on up and get to know the Tech Trails with members of the Copper Country Cycling Club. If you like mountain biking and want to get some in before classes start, just bring your bike and helmet up to the trails and have some fun! Just remember that a helmet is required to assure your safety. Please note that even though this trip is free, you still need to "purchase" a ticket to reserve your space on the trip. If you do not have your own bike up at Tech, you may rent a bike and helmet from the Outdoor Adventure Program Rental Center for a minimal fee.
