Reading as Inquiry is a University-wide initiative coordinated by the Department of Humanities and Student Life to help prepare you for college-level reading, inquiry, and discussion. A new summer reading book is chosen each year by a committee of students, faculty, and staff members. All first-year students are expected to read this book before arriving at Michigan Tech.
During Orientation, you will meet with a member of the faculty or staff and your Orientation team to discuss the book as a group. Then, the author of the book or a wellknown scholar will speak about the story, its characters, and its themes. Additional activities during Orientation will also focus on the book. The book choice will be announced this spring and information will be sent to you with all of the summer reading details.
Questions: Contact Patti Kirk, Student Life, at pakirk@mtu.edu or 906-487-2682. Visit www.hu.mtu.edu/SummerReading for more information.
“Besides the book being awesome, having a summer reading project gave
me a chance to slow down over the summer and to gradually focus my
thoughts and energy on college. It was a good transition tool.”
