House and Home
It will be easy to make friends at Michigan Tech. You
and about forty housemates may come from different
backgrounds, but you’ll have many things in common as
you settle into your residence hall. Halls are organized into
living areas called “houses.” You’ll transform your house
into a home away from home as you meet new people,
continue traditions, participate in campus activities, and
find your way around. The experiences you share with
your roommate(s) can be some of the most memorable
and rewarding times you will have while in college. With
just a little effort, you can create warm relationships with
roommates and housemates that will last for years to
come.
Once you arrive on campus, you should get to know your resident assistant (RA). Residence life staff members have been trained to assist you with a variety of issues, and your RA will meet with you and your roommate(s) during the first week of classes to help you fill out a roommate connection workbook. This workbook is important because it helps set basic guidelines and expectations for life in your room. You should not feel compelled to become best friends with your roommate(s), although quite often that is exactly what happens. However, there is nothing wrong with just being respectful roommates. Communication with your roommate(s) is important. Your roommate(s) may have different values, beliefs, and customs than you, and by communicating with them, you can prevent conflicts and learn some of the exciting differences and surprising similarities you may have.
Rooms and Furnishings
The standard double room measures 12’ x 15’ and
includes loftable beds, two chests of drawers, two desks,
two desk bookshelves, two study chairs, a wastebasket, and
carpeting. Triple and quad rooms are furnished accordingly.
All furniture must remain in your room at all times.
Since we do not furnish bed linens, you are encouraged
to purchase linens prior to arrival. The standard mattress
size is 36” x 80”. Extra-long twin sheets fit best. You are
responsible for laundering your own linens. You may
purchase linens online at www.rhl.org/linens.aspx.
Refrigerators
University-owned refrigerators (4.0 cubic feet) are
available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. The
cost is $56 per year or $28 per semester. Visit www.housing.
mtu.edu and click on Facilities to complete an online rental
form. You may bring your own refrigerator from home, but
it must not be larger than 25” wide by 25” deep by 35” high.
Please note that refrigerators are provided for those who
live in Wadsworth Hall rooms with a private bath.
Tri-Hall Weight Club
For the fitness enthusiast, each hall has a well-equipped
fitness room with aerobic and weight-training equipment.
All residence hall students can join the Tri-Hall Weight Club
for a $50 yearly membership fee. Visit www.housing.mtu.edu/thwc/index.html for details.
