Eating right and getting enough rest are two of the essentials for academic success. But, if you should find yourself under the weather or in need of some other help, the following resources are available.
Student Insurance
The University offers health insurance to currently
enrolled students, which covers basic medical care and
hospitalization. Information regarding the plans can be
found at www.admin.mtu.edu/hro/stud%20insurance/
index.shtml. If you are not covered under another
insurance plan, you may want to consider enrolling in this
plan. If you are an international student, you must provide
proof of medical health insurance to the student insurance
office; otherwise, you must subscribe to the policy offered
by the University. Call 906-487-1088 if you have questions.
Portage Health Medical Group—Houghton
www.portagehealth.org
Conveniently located on Michigan Tech’s campus, the
Portage Health Medical Group—Houghton Community
Health Center and Apothecary Pharmacy—offers the
services needed for students and the local community. This
medical group is owned and operated by Portage Health
and is located at the Student Development Complex (SDC).
The full-service clinic, staffed with three family practice
physicians and a nurse practitioner, also offers lab and
x-ray services on site.
Patients are best seen by appointment, but Medical Group staff will make every effort to schedule students in need of medical care on short notice if they call in advance. Regular clinic hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. The clinic’s phone number is 906-483-1860.
After-hours care is provided at the emergency department of the main Portage Health campus in Hancock, staffed twenty-four hours a day by emergencytrained physicians. The emergency department’s phone number is 906-483-1000. No appointments are needed for emergency services. An online directory of regional physicians and hospitals may be found at www.uphcn.org, the Upper Peninsula Health Care Network, or at www.portagehealth.org.
Disability Services
www.sa.mtu.edu/dean
The University is committed to assisting students with
documented physical and learning disabilities. Services and
accommodations may include extended time for exams,
select adaptive technology, priority scheduling, special
housing and parking arrangements, or other reasonable
assistances. If you have a disability and feel you may need
accommodation, please call Student Affairs at
906-487-2212.
Counseling and Wellness Services
www.counseling.mtu.edu
The staff in the Counseling and Wellness Services Office
can assist you with personal issues that may interfere
with the effective use of your talents. Counselors can
help you make decisions, manage stress, improve your
communication skills, and foster self-awareness. Any
concern you may have, including depression, pregnancy,
anxiety, loneliness, substance abuse, or problems with
a relationship can be discussed with a counselor in a
confidential setting. Programs, services, and events are also
offered throughout the academic year to promote wellness and encourage students to live healthy lifestyles.
Immunizations

We highly recommend that students have the following shots before coming
to school:
Meningococcal vaccination
- Tetanus-Diphtheria-Accellular Pertussis vaccine (a primary series and a booster within the last ten years)
- Two doses of measles vaccine or Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
- Varicella vaccine (two doses if you have not had chicken pox)
- Hepatitis A Vaccine
- Hepatitis B series (three doses)
In addition, it is recommended that students get flu shots in October or November. Flu shot clinics will be available on campus. For more information on immunizations, see the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, www.cdc.gov.
