Financial Aid
To apply for need-based federal and state financial aid,
all students must complete the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) each year.
Go online to www.fafsa.ed.gov to
complete the FAFSA online. You and your
parent(s) or guardian(s) will also need to
request a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov to sign
the FAFSA. To receive priority financial aid
consideration, the FAFSA must be received
at the federal processor by March 1.
If you file your FAFSA by March 1, you will receive a
financial aid award notice by April 1. This information
will be sent to you via your HuskyMail address. Be
sure to check your Michigan Tech email often.
Financial aid is not automatically renewed or guaranteed from one year to the next and program funding is dependent upon annual appropriations. You must reapply for financial aid each year by completing the FAFSA or the Renewal FAFSA. To retain eligibility for financial aid, students must maintain a full-time course load equal to 12 billable credits. They must also make satisfactory progress toward graduation, as defined by the Financial Aid Office, and federal and state regulations.
Scholarships
Federal regulations require that you notify the Financial
Aid Office of all outside scholarships. The Financial Aid
Office considers your non-university scholarships when
determining your eligibility for additional financial aid.
If you receive a scholarship that is
not listed on your financial aid award
notification, log on to the Husky Hub and
click on the Financial Aid tab. Select My
Award Information, choose the appropriate
aid year, and enter the information about
the scholarship.
To ensure your scholarship checks are
credited to your account, please ask the
donor to include your full name, your
Michigan Tech ID number (your M number),
and your date of birth on the scholarship
check and have it sent to

Loans
If you have been offered a Direct Loan, there are several
steps you must complete to ensure this loan is applied to
your student account.
Complete a Direct Loan Request Form
by logging in to the Husky Hub to view
your financial aid information. Click on the
Financial Aid tab, select My Awards, and
choose the appropriate aid year. Once you
have accepted the loan (or a partial amount of
the loan), the link to the Direct Loan Request
Form will appear for you to complete. A paper
copy of the form can also be obtained by
contacting the Financial Aid Office.
Once the loan is approved, you will be
sent an email notification instructing you to
complete an electronic Master Promissory
Note (MPN) and/or entrance counseling. The
electronic MPN will be available online at
www. dlenote.ed.gov only after the loan has
been approved. Entrance counseling can be
completed online anytime at
www. finaid.mtu.edu/preloan.php.
Loans that are processed for the full year will be split into two equal disbursements, one for fall semester and one for spring. The disbursement dates will be provided on the disclosure statement sent to you from the US Department of Education. Loans will appear on your student account once you have completed your Master Promissory Note and your US Department of Education Entrance Counseling.
Seeking Additional Financial Assistance
Students can seek additional private scholarships from
high schools, churches, community service organizations,
and corporations. The best time to search for these
scholarships is during winter and early spring.
Students and/or parents may apply for alternative and
private loans online. A list of lenders, as well as additional
information on the alternative loans, is located at
www.finaid.mtu.edu/alternativeloans.php. Parents may
apply for a federal Direct PLUS Loan on behalf of the
student. The application and information on the Direct
PLUS Loan is located at www.finaid.mtu.edu/plus.php.
You should apply at least three to four weeks prior to the date your bill is due to ensure that there is enough time to complete the loan application process. Although you may receive instant preapproval online from the loan company, most require you to submit additional information to them to continue processing your application.
