Parents and family members are an important factor in the success of first-year students. At Michigan Tech, we view students as young adults who are in the process of becoming responsible, accountable, and capable individuals. We respect their growing independence and hold them accountable for the decisions they make. We respect their privacy, but don’t always promise confidentiality; if needed, we will get others involved to ensure their well-being.
Michigan Tech views parents and guardians as our partners. We will collaborate with you to the best of our ability to assist your student; however, it is our preference to work directly with students in order to foster their growth and development. Parents and guardians should continue to strengthen and build the relationship with their student. Please note that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (also referred to as FERPA) does not permit public colleges and universities to provide information about students without their permission.
