The Department of Educational Opportunity (EdOpp), located in the Alumni House on the west side of campus, provides academic and personal educational opportunities, workshops, and student outreach programs that focus on student success, retention, and cultural awareness.
Outreach and Multi–Ethnic Programs
The Division of Outreach and Multi-Ethnic Programs
(OME) promotes diversity through academic, professional,
personal, and cultural experiences that foster a shared
sense of community for all students. The OME staff
assists students in identifying sources of financial aid and
personal development opportunities such as undergraduate
research, internship, and co-op positions.
The OME coordinators develop, implement, and direct cultural and cross-cultural programs and are a resource for African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American students. OME conducts multiethnic events such as the Parade of Nations, Black History Week, Martin Luther King Week, Native American Speakers’ Forum, Spirit of the Harvest Powwow, and Gala Latina. These programs are designed to promote awareness and understanding of diversity on campus and in the local community.
ExSEL and Academic Enrichment Programs
The ExSEL program provides Michigan Tech students
with opportunities for academic and personal support,
leadership development, and professional growth that
address their individual needs. The program assists
incoming students in making a smooth transition from
high school to university work by strengthening time
management and study skills, faculty and peer support
systems, and campus involvement. Students who develop
their study skills and support systems early on in their
college career are more likely to stay in college and perform
well in their higher-level courses.
