Computing at Michigan Tech is readily available and each academic department has computing facilities with the hardware and software you will need for your course work. Your basic computing fee provides you with a computer lab, basic office software, applications specific to your department, and the printing resources you will need. More information is available at www.mtu.edu/computing and www.tc.mtu.edu/customerservice/studentservices.
Plugging In
Many students bring their own desktop or laptop
computer. Resnet is Michigan Tech’s residence hall network
that provides high-speed access to email, the Internet, and
other network resources from the comfort of residence hall.
See www.resnet.mtu.edu for more information.
Connecting Without Wires
Wireless access “hot zones” are available across campus.
Students with laptops or PDAs that include a WiFi-certified
802.11b/g network card can access the wireless network.
Wireless routers and hubs are not recommended for
residence hall rooms because of the high likelihood of
interference and security concerns. For a complete list of
active wireless locations, see
www.rovernet.mtu.edu/locations/index.htm.
Telephone
Each residence hall room includes a single telephone line,
but you will need to provide your own phone.
On-campus, local, and long-distance calls can be made
from your room for free. Call anywhere in the US, Canada,
and island nations that use the North American number
plan (i.e., xxx-xxx-xxxx) for free. Numbers that start with
the international access code of 011 will require a calling
card. You may provide your own card or obtain one from
Telcom Customer Service located in the Electrical Energy
Resources Center (EERC) Room B12. For further details, visit
www.tc.mtu.edu/voice/index.htm.
Voicemail is available at no cost if you wish to sign up. With multiple students per room, voicemail trees can be set up so you have a private voicemail box. See www.tc.mtu. edu/voice/voiceservices/voicemail/students/index.php for more information.
Cell Phone
The Houghton area is serviced by two wireless providers,
AT&T and Alltel/Verizon. Michigan Tech participates in a
program with AT&T where members of the Michigan Tech
community can receive a discount on services purchased
through AT&T retail stores. If you already have wireless
service through another carrier, check with your provider
for coverage.
Michigan Tech Cable TV—Husky Movie Vision
Residence hall rooms have cable TV service provided
by Michigan Tech. Included in the channel lineup is the
Husky Movie Vision channel, which shows studentselected
movies. Premium channels are also available by
subscription. For a channel lineup and more information,
