If you are from the local area and are attending Michigan Tech this fall, you may choose to live at home with your parent(s) or guardian(s). Life at Tech is somewhat different for students who commute to campus, but all the great resources and opportunities are still available, and we encourage you to take advantage of them. Often commuter students make use of their time between classes studying in the library or Memorial Union Building, visiting the learning centers, or eating a quick meal in one of the campus dining facilities. Sometimes they visit friends from class who live in the residence halls. Whatever you choose to do, we encourage you to get involved on campus. We also encourage you to look for employment opportunities on campus as another way to get involved in the campus community.
Commuter Services
COMPASS offers a commuter mentor for students who
do not live on campus. The commuter mentor serves as a
peer resource to commuter students and is available during
office hours for questions, concerns, or conversation. The
commuter mentor also plans free events on campus for
commuter students to get involved and to get to know one
another. Each month, the Commuter Connections newsletter
is published to inform commuters of upcoming campus
events and to discuss issues relevant to commuting to
campus. For more information, please visit www.compass.

For your convenience, lockers are available in the Keweenaw Commons area of the Memorial Union Building. These lockers provide an easy storage option if you don’t want to haul your books back and forth to campus each day. Lockers can be reserved at the Tech Express Service Center, inside the Campus Bookstore, by paying a refundable $15.00 deposit, and a fee of $7.50 per semester. All commuter students must register their vehicles with the University.
Questions: Contact COMPASS at compass@mtu.edu, 906-487-3558, or visit www.compass.mtu.edu.
Commuter Student Parking
Commuter students may park in lots 9, 26, or 32. Lot 9 is
located near the Rozsa Center, Lot 26 is off Garnet Street,
and Lot 32 is off MacInnes Drive. You may park in any of
these lots during Orientation, but you must register your
vehicle with the University before classes begin. There are
two ways to register:
- online at the Registrar's website here
- in person at the Office of Student Records and Registration, Administration Building, Room 110

Commuter students who register their
vehicles online by August 15 will receive
their parking decals in the mail. Students
registering after that date will need to pick up
their parking decals at the Office of Student
Records and Registration, Administration
Building, Room 110.
Questions: Contact the Registrar's Office (Student Records and Registration) at stuosrr@mtu.edu, 906-487-2319, or visit www.mtu.edu/registrar/.
Commuter Student Meal Plans
Two meal plans are available for commuter students—
one if you would like to eat in the residence hall dining
centers, and another if you prefer eating in the retail dining
operations like the Campus Café or MUB Food Mall.
The Top Dog Express Meal Plan can be purchased in blocks of ten, twenty-five, fifty, or seventy-five meals. The more meals you purchase, the less you pay per meal. This plan can be used in any residence dining hall (DHH, McNair, or Wadsworth Hall) and features the all-you-can-eat, buffet-style dining.
The Big Dog Express Meal Plan is designed for those who dine frequently in Tech’s retail dining outlets—the MUB Food Mall, Corner Store, Aftermath Café, Campus Café, and selected vending machines throughout campus. This account is like a debit-card system, and, depending on how much money you deposit, we’ll add a percentage. If you deposit $25–$99, we add 3 percent; if you deposit $100–199.99, we add 4 percent; and if you deposit $200 or more, we add 5 percent.
Both meal plans can be purchased at the Tech Express Service Center in the Campus Bookstore, located in the Memorial Union Building. For more information on off-campus meal plans, please visit www.dining.mtu.edu/sub/big_dog_top_dog.html.
