You will be provided with an academic advisor to assist you and guide you in course selection during your time at Michigan Tech. At Orientation, you will meet with your advisor to begin planning your academic career.
Your academic advisor will help you:
- answer questions about your major, minor, and academic policies
- understand degree requirements
- plan your overall curriculum and semester course selection
- explore career options
- find other University and community resources
When you plan to see your academic advisor, you are responsible for:
- preparing a list of questions in advance
- working out a tentative schedule for the upcoming semester
- taking responsibility for decisions made and following through
- seeking out resources and referrals offered by your advisor
Remember that you are responsible for knowing your degree requirements and making your academic choices accordingly. Your advisor is available to assist you with this process.
“My advisor has gone above and beyond his job description in making
sure that I get into the best classes that suit my educational goals as
well as those that will enhance my college experience.”
—Maria Cerroni, senior,
biological sciences/business and economics
Changing Your Major
Plenty of first-year students start college unsure of their major, and some students decide to change their
major along the way. You can start the major exploration process now by working with your high school guidance
counselor; he or she may have resources that can assist you. You can also visit the Michigan Tech website and
explore the many different majors, minors, and certificate programs offered here. Your academic advisor can help
you navigate a change of major or add a double major, minor, or certificate once you’re here.
If you wish to discuss changing your major from what you originally listed on your application for admission prior to arriving at Michigan Tech, contact the admissions staff at 888-688-1885 or email mtu4u@mtu.edu before Orientation. This will ensure that you are placed onto an Orientation team with students who have declared the same major that you wish to pursue, allowing you to meet some of your future classmates. Please note that, for financial aid reasons, all incoming students must declare a major.
